Respite Care in Carlsbad for Family Caregivers

When you are the one caring for a parent or spouse at home in Carlsbad, the days fill up fast: meals, bathing, appointments, evenings and often the night. Respite care gives you planned time away while one of our caregivers keeps your loved one's routine steady in the home they know. Heritage Senior Care provides non-medical in-home respite across Carlsbad, including the Village and Olde Carlsbad, La Costa, Aviara, Calavera Hills and Bressi Ranch / southern Carlsbad. We have been family-owned here since 1983, and all scheduling is handled from our one office in Carlsbad.

What respite care looks like for Carlsbad families

Respite is short-term or recurring in-home care so the family caregiver can rest, work, travel or keep their own appointments. It is the same non-medical help we provide on longer plans, just scheduled around your break. Families in Carlsbad often use respite to:

  • Sleep through the night while an overnight caregiver is awake in the home

  • Keep a regular job, or catch up on their own doctor's visits and errands

  • Travel, attend a wedding or family event, or take a support group meeting

  • Try care at home before deciding on longer 8- to 24-hour shifts

  • Share the load when dementia care has become a full-time job for a spouse or adult child

Respite care visits have the same 4-hour minimum as our other visits. You can book once, or set a recurring schedule such as one afternoon a week, every other weekend or a few nights a month. Families along the coast who need a city-specific page for Encinitas can also see respite care in Encinitas.

Shift lengths that match the break you need

How long you need away shapes the shift we schedule:

  • 4-hour visits, the minimum, for a morning or afternoon off while our caregivers help with personal care, meals, companionship and light housekeeping

  • Full-day shifts of 8 to 12 hours, so you can work a full day or take a real day off

  • Overnight shifts, so someone is awake in the home if your loved one gets up, feels confused or needs help to the bathroom

  • Multi-day and 24-hour coverage, with caregivers scheduled in shifts around the clock when you need several days away

Heritage provides longer coverage through scheduled shifts. See how our 24-hour and overnight care works.

Respite when dementia is part of the picture

A large share of Carlsbad families who call us for respite are caring for someone with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia. The person may still manage parts of the day, but the family caregiver cannot leave safely for long. Our caregivers keep familiar routines going, offer steady supervision and help with bathing, dressing, meals, medication reminders and calm evenings when sundowning shows up.

If dementia is the main reason you need a break, also see our Carlsbad dementia and 24-hour care page and our broader Alzheimer's and dementia care. For nights that are hardest, overnight care for sundowning explains how those shifts work.

Care that fits Carlsbad homes

Carlsbad stretches from the beach inland to the hills, and the house itself shapes how a respite visit goes:

  • Carlsbad Village and Olde Carlsbad: walkable streets near the beach, with older cottages, condos and small lots, where a short walk can still reach familiar shops or the water

  • La Costa: established neighborhoods on rolling hills around the Omni La Costa resort, with larger homes, pools and yards that need watching when someone is outdoors

  • Aviara: larger single-family homes near Batiquitos Lagoon and the Aviara golf course, often in gated enclaves, where long hallways and multiple levels matter

  • Calavera Hills and Robertson Ranch: inland neighborhoods near the Calavera trails, with newer homes and quiet streets

  • Bressi Ranch / southern Carlsbad: newer homes, many of them two-story with bedrooms upstairs, around a walkable village center

At the free assessment we walk through the home with you, including stairs, bathrooms, entry doors, pools, patios, yards and any gates, and plan the respite visit around how your loved one actually spends the day. For general home care in the city, see our Carlsbad home care page.

How scheduling works from our Carlsbad office

All scheduling runs from our one office at 2111 Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad — right here in the city. Our caregivers are W-2 employees of Heritage Senior Care, Inc. We hire, train, schedule and supervise them ourselves. They live and work across North County San Diego and come to your Carlsbad home for the hours you book.

We do not promise a particular Carlsbad-neighborhood caregiver or a set response time. We match available caregivers to your loved one's needs, personality and the shift length you need, and we go over entry, parking and any household routines with you before the first visit.

Carlsbad resources for family caregivers

A few local places families here turn to while they are also arranging care at home:

  • Carlsbad Senior Center, the City of Carlsbad center on Pine Avenue. It offers Adults 50+ classes, a fitness room and activities, weekday lunches for adults 60 and older, and transportation to lunch for qualifying Carlsbad residents.

  • Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane (and the Georgina Cole Library on Carlsbad Village Drive), quiet, familiar outings during a caregiver's break or a short supervised visit.

  • Alzheimer's San Diego, a nonprofit offering free support groups for family caregivers led by trained facilitators. A Carlsbad Active Caregivers group is not currently listed in their October 2026 directory, so call 858-492-4400 for the latest openings or an interest list. Nearby in-person groups include Oceanside on the second and fourth Tuesdays and San Marcos on the first and third Tuesdays, plus virtual groups you can join from home and specialized groups for adult children and long-distance caregivers.

  • Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside and Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas are where many Carlsbad families are when a discharge date suddenly creates the need for a few days of help at home. The hospital team handles the medical side; our caregivers help with daily life once your loved one is home.

Support for you and care for your loved one go hand in hand: a group or program helps the family, and respite at home helps the person who needs watching.

Veterans and their families

Some Carlsbad families are caring for a veteran or a veteran's surviving spouse. Heritage Senior Care is contracted with the VA for Homemaker and respite care. The VA decides eligibility and costs. We don't file VA claims, but we can connect families with VA-accredited people who do. Learn more about in-home care for veterans.

Long-term care insurance

A long-term care insurance policy may help pay for respite and other care at home. Every policy is different, so we offer a long-term care insurance policy review and walk through the policy with you before care starts.

Simple, flexible terms

  • 4-hour visit minimum: time for meaningful help, not a hurried check-in

  • No long-term contracts: book once, set a recurring schedule, add hours or pause as needs change

  • Free in-home assessment: we meet you and your loved one at home before care starts
